What to Expect at a Boating Course?– this is how our ICC+B training works

2026.03.04.

What can you expect from a boating course? We show you how our ICC+B training works step by step, from registration all the way to the exam.

ICC+B category course at Sidro Nautika

Most people choose the ICC+B category first. This is an international boating license that allows you to operate a boat both on inland waters and at sea. Many people choose it for exactly this reason, because they do not want to be limited to just one location. If someone starts on Lake Balaton but later would like to sail at sea as well, this category makes it possible. Usually, those who apply are people who are starting for the first time and want a solid, well-usable foundation.

The course itself begins with a trip abroad, which already gives the whole experience a special atmosphere. The first part of the day is mostly about everyone arriving mentally as well. We get to know each other, talk through how everything will happen, and this is usually the moment when the initial uncertainty many people feel starts to disappear. The training is built up step by step, with theoretical and practical lessons, and eventually we arrive at the exam. When it comes to the theory, you should not imagine dry material. During the training we also work with maps, and we explain things through real situations so you can see what to pay attention to. We discuss what you see in a given situation, what it means, and what connections are worth recognizing. However, this is only one element among the many practical and theoretical parts of the program. The focus is on understanding the whole picture, not on memorizing. If someone has a question or something is not clear, we stop, take out the map again, explain it in a different way, or bring another example. The goal is for you to clearly see the situation in your mind and understand why things happen the way they do. Then we move forward once everything is clear for everyone.

The group also starts to come together more and more. At the beginning everyone is a bit quieter, trying to find the rhythm, but the atmosphere gradually becomes more relaxed. We talk, share stories about why each person decided to start, and where their first trip might be. This gives the whole experience a calm and natural flow. At that point you no longer think of it as a course, but as a completely new experience.

As the exam day approaches, a little exam nervousness usually appears. This is completely normal, we see it with almost everyone. But you should not imagine a classic, tense exam situation, rather a calm environment where we go through the things you have already learned before. By that point everything is familiar, and nothing will come as a surprise. The questions and situations will feel familiar because you have already encountered them during the preparation. By the end, most people say it was much easier than they had expected beforehand.

When you receive your license at the end, the first feeling is relief, followed by the realization that you really did it. What only a few days earlier seemed like a big step suddenly feels completely natural. Many people later say they imagined it to be a much bigger challenge at the beginning than it actually was. Not because it does not require attention or effort, but because the whole process is built up in a clear and logical way. You move forward step by step, and by the time you reach the end, you are already sitting behind the wheel with full confidence.

From this point on, everything is up to you. The knowledge is there, the license is in your hands, and from here you decide where your first journey will take you.
