From Cargo Ship to Hollywood Star

On screen, the Black Pearl looks like a classic 18th-century wooden beauty that not even a sea curse could destroy. In reality, however, building it gave the production team quite a headache. In the first installment of the franchise (The Curse of the Black Pearl), the ship wasn't a real sailboat at all; it was a wooden structure built on a barge and towed in open water. When the movie became a massive success, the studio decided that for the sequels, they needed a truly navigable, converted ship.

The solution was a 43-meter-long modern steel-hulled cargo ship named Sunset. With incredible craftsmanship, set designers covered the hull in wooden cladding, built massive masts, and fitted it with pitch-black sails. The end result was a hybrid that looked like an 18th-century cursed pirate ship from the outside, but was powered by internal combustion engines on the inside for safe maneuvering.

Myths and Reality, how Sea Rogues Really Lived

Based on the movies, one might think that chaos, mutiny, and drinking were constant on pirate ships. In reality, Caribbean pirates were surprisingly disciplined and organized, simply because their lives on the open sea depended on it.

• "Walking the plank" is just a myth: An indispensable element of movies is making prisoners walk a plank into shark-infested waters. In reality, pirates never wasted time on this: if they wanted to get rid of someone, they simply threw them into the water or marooned them on a deserted island with a canteen of water.
• Perfect democracy on board: While in the Royal Navy the captain ruled as a cruel tyrant, on pirate ships the crew elected the captain! If the leader didn't perform well or put the ship at unnecessary risk, they could be voted out of office.
• Rules of sharing: The loot was distributed according to strict rules, and they even had "accident insurance." If someone lost an eye or a leg in battle, they received special compensation from the shared chest.

The Sense of Freedom Movies Can't Fully Convey

Why do we still love pirate movies so much? It is hardly because of plundering or gunpowder smoke. The answer is much closer to our everyday lives: we simply long for freedom. When the Black Pearl turns into the wind and sets off across open waters, something inevitably resonates in most of us. We think about how great it would be to stand at the helm right now. The rush stops, annoying traffic jams disappear, and office stress vanishes into thin air. What remains is the water, the fresh air, and that comforting feeling that you finally have nothing to do.
