A City That Is Recognizable Even from Afar
If you have ever approached Rovinj by boat, you surely remember the first moment. The church tower rising on the hilltop, the colorful houses built tightly next to one another, and the bustling harbor create an incredible sight even from a distance. It is no wonder that many consider it one of the most beautiful towns on the Istrian Peninsula.
What Is Worth Doing in Rovinj?
In Rovinj, almost everything is about the slow, Mediterranean way of life. Wander through the cobblestone streets of the old town, visit the local galleries and craft shops, or sit down on a seaside terrace for a coffee.
If you love views, walk up to the Church of St. Euphemia, Rovinj’s most famous building. The nearly 60-meter-high bell tower was built after the model of the tower of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and from the top you can see almost the entire old town, the harbor, and the surrounding islands.
If nature attracts you more, head to Zlatni Rt Forest Park, also known by locals as Golden Cape. Shady pine forests, cycling paths, rocky stretches of coast, and smaller beaches follow one another. You can even rent a bicycle and explore it that way.
A Little Relaxation by the Sea
Around Rovinj, there are several smaller islands and sheltered bays that are perfect for a short stop or a refreshing swim. St. Andrew’s Island, located in front of the city, also known as Crveni Otok, and Katarina Island are two of the area’s best-known excursion spots, where crystal-clear water, rocky shores, and peaceful bays await visitors.
If you like diving or snorkeling, you certainly will not be disappointed here. The water visibility often reaches 20–30 meters, so you can easily observe starfish, sea urchins, and smaller schools of fish.
If you do not have your own diving equipment, it is worth visiting the Rovinj Sub Diving Center. Located near the harbor, the center offers masks, snorkels, fins, and full diving equipment for rent, and they also organize guided dives for both beginners and advanced divers.
Where Is It Worth Eating?
If you would like a truly memorable dinner, La Puntulina can be a good choice. The restaurant is built directly onto the seaside rocks, so many people visit it not only for the local seafood but also for the panorama. The menu is based on fresh Adriatic ingredients. If you enjoy seafood flavors, it is worth trying the tuna tartare, the scampi from the Kvarner Bay, or the grilled sea bass, which is one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. The experience is made truly complete by a glass of local Malvazija white wine.
If you would rather have lunch in a family-style, traditional konoba, Konoba Jure is an excellent choice. The menu focuses on local classics: Istrian cheese with truffle, squid served with polenta, mussels buzara in white wine, scampi from the Kvarner Bay, and grilled Adriatic fish all bring the flavors of the region. If you would prefer a meat dish, the grilled steak with truffle is also one of the house specialties.
Did You Know?
Dolphins can often be spotted around Rovinj, especially in the morning or evening hours. Although there is no guarantee of an encounter, for many boaters this is one of the most special Adriatic experiences.
