Magic or Reality?

Nights spent on open water offer a truly unique experience. Glowing blue waves, floating islands, and strange ocean phenomena reveal nature’s magical side, once feared by sailors but now admired as some of the sea’s most breathtaking sights.

The Thousand Faces of the Sea

The Glowing Sea
Imagine that during a night sail, the waves created by your boat glow with a sharp, neon blue light. This isn't magic; it's bioluminescence. Tiny plankton (dinoflagellates) emit light when triggered by physical impact. It looks as if the starry sky were reflected underwater, or as if your boat were wading through liquid stardust. Anyone who witnesses this from the deck of a sailboat never forgets the experience-especially seeing dolphins swim alongside the hull, leaving glowing trails in their wake.

Electricity in the Air
Before or during storms, bluish, glowing tufts sometimes appear at the tips of masts. Ancient sailors called this St. Elmo’s Fire and often viewed it as a good omen, believing their patron saint was with them. In reality, it is a plasma state: static electricity accumulated during stormy weather discharges on pointed objects. It is spectacular, but also serves as a vital warning for the modern skipper: the atmosphere is oversaturated, and the risk of lightning is imminent.

The "Flying Dutchman"
Have you ever heard the legends of floating ships? Fata Morgana is a unique type of mirage that occurs due to temperature differences between layers of air above the sea. Light is refracted, lifting objects below the horizon such as another ship or an island into the air, stretching them, or projecting them upside down. This phenomenon gave birth to tales of ghost ships, where sailors swore they saw vessels flying above the water.

"Singing Sands" and Underwater Hum
The sea can surprise you not just visually, but also through sound. In certain bays, the sand produces a singing or whistling sound when walked upon or when the wind blows across it. Even stranger are the low-frequency underwater sounds that can be amplified by the boat’s hull. These are often caused by whale communication or underwater tectonic movements, but during a quiet night watch, they provide a truly mystical experience.

The Secret of the Sunset
If the weather is clear, at the very last moment of sunset as the sun's disk disappears below the horizon, a flash of vivid green light appears. This is the "Green Flash." It lasts only a few seconds and is caused by atmospheric refraction. Among sailors, the saying goes: whoever sees the green flash will never get lost again and will gain the ability to read the feelings of others.
