Few experiences during an Adriatic sailing trip are as memorable as seeing a group of dolphins suddenly appear beside the boat. Many people believe this is extremely rare, but the Adriatic is home to a stable population of bottlenose dolphins. In the right place and at the right time, there is a fairly good chance of seeing them.
Of course, there is no route where dolphins are guaranteed to appear, but there are certain areas where the chances are considerably higher.
One of the best-known areas is around the island of Lošinj, often referred to as the dolphin capital of the Adriatic. Bottlenose dolphins have been studied here for decades, and it is not unusual to spot several of them while sailing nearby.
There is also a good chance of encountering dolphins between the islands of Cres, Lošinj and Susak. They are frequently seen along the western coast of Istria, especially around Rovinj.
In southern Dalmatia, dolphins are also regularly spotted around Hvar, Vis and Korčula, particularly in the more open sections of the sea.
Although dolphins live in the Adriatic throughout the year, most sailors encounter them between May and October. During the summer months, there are far more boats on the water, which naturally results in a greater number of reported sightings.
The time of day also matters. Experience suggests that dolphins are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, when the sea is usually calmer as well. This makes it easier to spot dorsal fins breaking the surface or their characteristic jumps.
The most important rule is not to chase the dolphins or try to approach them. Dolphins are wild animals and should be allowed to decide whether they want to swim close to the boat.
They will often approach the bow out of curiosity and may swim alongside the boat for several minutes.
When this happens, reduce your speed, maintain a steady and predictable course, and enjoy the moment without disturbing them. You should never attempt to feed or touch them.
The Adriatic is a relatively shallow sea that provides bottlenose dolphins with an abundant food supply. Its fish-rich waters offer suitable living conditions throughout the year, which means many dolphins do not migrate but consider the Adriatic their permanent habitat.
Conservation programmes introduced in recent years have also helped ensure that these intelligent marine mammals can still be regularly observed along the Croatian coastline.
An encounter with dolphins cannot be planned down to the exact minute, which is precisely what makes it so special. They may suddenly appear on a quiet morning between two islands or accompany your boat for a few minutes as the sun sets.
These are the moments that make so many people return to the Adriatic again and again.
If you would like to explore the Croatian coastline with your own boat and experience unforgettable moments like these, it is worth obtaining the appropriate international boating licence. The Adriatic has something new to offer on every sailing trip.
