You have your license. Does that mean you don’t need a skipper?

Not necessarily. 😄

You have the boat, the team is together, and you’ve even mapped out the route. Now you just need to decide: will you be the captain, or should a skipper come along with you?

If you hold the appropriate boating license, you can rent a boat without a skipper as well. However, having the license on paper doesn't automatically mean you should immediately test yourself on a full one-week charter.

A much more important question is how comfortable you feel behind the wheel.

When is it a good idea to go with a skipper?

For instance, if this will be your first major boating holiday, you don't have much hands-on experience yet, or you simply don't want to be responsible for everything this time.

With a skipper by your side, you’ll have more time for what you likely organized the whole trip for: swimming, exploring bays, watching sunsets, enjoying great food, and spending quality time with your group. 🌊

It can also be a great choice if you’ve obtained your license only recently. Because having a license is one thing staying calm when the wind picks up, the marina is full, and you still have to dock the boat... well, that’s more a matter of experience.

When can you go without a skipper?

If you can maneuver confidently, have solid experience, and the thought of actually being the captain this time doesn't give you butterflies in your stomach, then a bareboat charter is the way to go. ⛵

And that certainly has its own charm.

You get to decide when to set sail, which bay to drop anchor in, where to spend the evening, and when to change your plans. In return, of course, all the decisions and responsibilities land on your shoulders.

Ask yourself these few questions:

• Would you feel confident docking in a crowded marina?
• What would you do if the weather suddenly changed along the way?
• Would you comfortably drive a boat you’ve never been on before?

If your immediate answer to these isn't a confident "of course," that is completely fine. It might be wise to choose a skipper for your first charter, so you can observe, ask questions, and gather experience along the way.

Go with a skipper if this is your first charter, if you're still building your routine, or if you’d simply rather spend your holiday relaxing than acting as the captain.

Go without a skipper if you have the license, the necessary experience, and the confidence to handle it yourself.

Neither option is inherently better than the other. The right decision is the one that lets you enjoy being out on the water instead of stressing all week about what you’ve signed up for.
