A beginner’s boating experience on the Adriatic – Sailing along the Croatian coast
The first surprise is that boating is not a fast-paced activity. Boarding, packing, docking, setting off and anchoring all take time. It is worth planning your day without a strict minute-by-minute schedule, leaving enough time to do everything comfortably.
What may seem like a pleasant breeze on shore can cause much stronger waves out on the water. That is why checking the general weather forecast before departure is not enough. Marine forecasts and wind data are much more important. In Croatia, Plovput’s marine weather reports also include special warnings, wind information and forecasts for boaters.
The water reflects sunlight, while the wind often prevents you from noticing how intensely the sun is burning. Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and enough drinking water are considered essential equipment. One of the most common mistakes during a first boat trip is only noticing that you are sunburnt when it is already too late.
A beautiful bay does not automatically mean that it is legal and safe to anchor there. In Croatia, there are certain areas where anchoring is strictly prohibited, and these are marked on official nautical charts and in maritime publications. Croatian regulations also prohibit releasing waste or wastewater into the sea while anchored.
A route may look perfectly fine on Google Maps, but at sea you also need to consider water depth, buoys, restricted zones, ports, wind direction and navigational signs. According to the Croatian Hydrographic Institute, official nautical charts are specifically designed to make navigation safer.
Before your first boat trip, it is worth downloading Croatia’s nIS application. It contains weather information, navigation rules, details about ports, anchorages and fuel stations, as well as emergency contact information. The app was published by the Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure and was created specifically for people staying on the coast or at sea.
Your first boat trip will be a truly enjoyable experience when you prepare for the small details as well as the programme itself. A little planning, some practical basic equipment and the right information can make a huge difference. This way, at the end of the day, you will not remember the unpleasant surprises, but the feeling of seeing the coastline from the water for the first time.
